The Southeast Missouri State University Orchestra will open its 1994-95 concert season Tuesday with a performance of music by Mozart, Copland and Hindemith.

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. in historic Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau. Soloists will include Adrian Walker, violin; Marc Fulgham, trumpet; and Gary Miller, English horn. All are faculty members.

The orchestra is conducted and directed by Sara Edgerton.

The concert will begin with a performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major, a favorite among string players and audiences alike. Walker will be the soloist.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he joins the Southeast faculty this year. He has been a member of the St. Louis Symphony since 1985. He has been invited to perform this concerto to open the concert season for the Mississippi Symphony Chamber Orchestra in Jackson, Miss.

Hindemith's Five Pieces for String Orchestra, Op. 44, written in 1927, will follow. The composition blends Baroque forms with Hindemith's rich harmonic language.

Copland's "Quiet City" began as incidental music to a play by Irwin Show. Copland reworked the material as an orchestral piece featuring trumpet and English horn.

Fulgham and Miller will solo. Fulgham is principal trumpet of the Paducah Symphony and has recorded with the Summit Brass on its "All American Brass" CD. Miller, whose doctorate is in organ performance, performed as oboist and English hornist with the Atlantic Fleet Band in Norfolk, Va.

The orchestra will conclude the evening with another popular Mozart work, Symphony No. 29 in A Major.

Admission is $4 for the general public and $2 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free with a university ID.
