The Southeast Missouri University Foundation has received a sizable donation earmarked for the Charles H. Daues Scholarship Fund.
George and Placide Schriever of New York, N.Y., recently donated $50,000 to the fund, which benefits students showing financial need and academic ability, giving preferential treatment to Missouri high school graduates. The couple previously donated $100,000 to the fund.
The Charles H. Daues Scholarship Fund is named for Placide Schriever's father, a graduate of the university when it was known as the Third District Normal School in 1898.
Daues, who died in 1938, was studying at Washington University in St. Louis when he passed the Missouri Bar Exam.
He was a prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County from 1905 to 1906. He also was a presiding judge of the Missouri State Court of Appeals.
Schriever said the university changed his life, his wife's life and my life. "I believe in it," she said.
The Schrievers said they contribute to the scholarship fund because they understand the need for educational opportunities in the under-served area of the Missouri Bootheel.
