As part of Community Volunteer Month, the Area Wide United Way is highlighting the efforts of some local volunteers, hoping to encourage others.
Brian Kohlberg, a graduate student at Southeast Missouri State University, is working on his MBA and plans to graduate in May 2004. Following graduation, he will seek employment as a financial planner.
He became involved in volunteering through his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. Kohlberg especially enjoys working with children in a mentor/teaching capacity. He feels that through the children he can make a difference in a life and in a community.
Kohlberg spends two hours a week tutoring at the preschool Head Start program.
He also worked as a team buddy for Special Olympics, tutored math and English classes as part of the Adopt-A-School program and has worked in the afterschool Boys' Club.
Kohlberg has also been involved in the Volunteer Intergenerational Center, which he said "is a great place to go to find the type of volunteer work you are most interested in."
