Families in Southeast Missouri facing financial uncertainty now have another resource to turn to for help.
Launched Friday by the United Way of Southeast Missouri, the Money Matters website lists relevant services and links to agencies that offer financial information and tips. Those services include assistance with information about foreclosures, financial literacy, job training and searching, mental health counseling and small business centers.
The site also offers answers to questions asked by people in dire financial straits. Questions cover topics such as avoiding and handling a foreclosure, where to turn if unable to pay a mortgage in full or on time and ways to earn additional money.
"The site is a one-stop shop for folks seeking help," said John McGowan, director of community impact for United Way of Southeast Missouri. "A lot of people need help and ways to access certain issues they're interested in."
McGowan said the idea for the site began several months ago after a meeting organized by John Hudak of the Community Counseling Center in Cape Girardeau with United Way of Southeast Missouri leaders. The website has been constantly updated since the meeting and is a work in progress, McGowan said. He said several families have already received help as a result of the site.
