On Thursday, the United Way of Southeast Missouri distanced itself from a survey recently sent to Central Junior High School students by EPIC, Early Prevention Impacts Community.
The United Way said EPIC is not a funded partner of the agency.
The United Way founded the Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition in 2000 as a result of a survey that identified substance abuse as a root cause of many social issues. The agency gathered professionals to find ways to deter youths from choosing these unhealthy behaviors, the statement stated.
The coalition eventually gained its own not-for-profit status and adopted the name EPIC. EPIC's mission is to build a healthy and safe community by reducing the risks of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs while promoting the healthy attitudes and behaviors of youths in Southeast Missouri.
"As an organization that works to resolve important community issues, we understand that surveys are important instruments to use in assessing conditions and possible solutions and do not feel this unfortunate incident is a reflection of the goals or spirit of EPIC and those who work so hard on this important issue," the statement stated.
