Although change often can be painful, it almost always brings growth.
That was one of the key messages delivered Tuesday afternoon during the United Way of Southeast Missouri's annual Media Luncheon at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau.
"We're excited about the challenges and opportunities ahead," said executive director Elizabeth Shelton, who reminded the crowd Tuesday was just her seventh day on the job, urging attendees "to go easy on me."
Shelton took the helm of the not-for-profit agency after the elimination in June of its director of education initiatives and the departure of former executive director and 20-year United Way veteran Nancy Jernigan in May.
"For the United Way of Southeast Missouri, this year, more than ever, is about change," Shelton said.
Reminding attendees Aug. 27 will mark the United Way's official 2015 campaign kickoff, Shelton emphasized this year's theme, which is "Turning Passion into Action."
Three key quality-of-life indicators are at the heart of the organization's 36 programs and community partnerships, including health, education and income, she said. She also thanked media partners for spreading awareness.
Most of the work of helping children, families and others is accomplished by the United Way investing in partner organizations. That is why it no longer made sense to have a full-time staff salary devoted to educational initiatives, said Melissa Stickel, director of operations and community impact, who recently took on several education-related responsibilities.
Stickel, formerly the director of community development, is overseeing United Way's Success by 6 and LIFE initiatives.
The 2015 Campaign kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at Cape West 14 Cine.
