The leak, under the paved surface, was reported Tuesday night.

"We vented the gas into the atmosphere when it was first reported," said Doug Groesbeck of AmerenUE. Holes were drilled Tuesday night to allow the gas to escape into the atmosphere.

AmerenUE, after waiting for all the gas to evaporate from the ground, started excavation work on the street Wednesday.

"Everything went well," said Groesbeck. "We should be through today."

Groesbeck said that a gas meter would also be moved during the excavation.

"We'll move the gas meter from the back of a store building there, to the front in an underground vault," he said. "We already have a lot of Main Street meters in underground vaults."
