U. of Ill. a top target for foreign students

URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- An education group says the University of Illinois had more foreign students last year than any other public university in the country and more than all but three private schools.

The Institute of International Education says Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus had 6,570 international students. That's more than all but the University of Southern California, which had 7,482 foreign students, New York University at 6,761 and Columbia University's 6,685.

Among Big Ten schools, Purdue had the second-largest international population with 6,136 students.

The institute says 671,616 international students were enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. That's an 8 percent increase from a year earlier.
