Police responded to an injury accident late this afternoon on Interstate 55, stopping traffic for about 15 minutes when a car rolled over on the northbound side near mile marker 93, Sgt. Barry Hovis, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department, said.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was ejected from the car and pinned beneath it for a brief time, but other people were able to move it off of her, Hovis said.

She was badly injured and transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The front seat passenger, husband of the driver, was also injured and taken to the hospital, Hovis said.

A 17-year-old passenger in the backseat suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene, he said.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but tickets may be issued later, Hovis said.
