Bi-State Southern at 920 N. Kingshighway reported an unusual burglary Monday morning that resulted in the theft of a significant amount of cash, Cape Girardeau Police said.

The incident allegedly occurred around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, but wasn't reported until about 8:30 Monday morning, said Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman for the police department.

There were four store employees inside Bi-State when the theft occurred, Selzer said, but only three were on duty.

Two men walked into the store and one began talking to employees while the second went straight to the back of the store and entered an unlocked office, Selzer said,

Because the office is not considered a public area, the crime was reported as a burglary although no actual break-in or forcible entry occurred.

A significant amount of cash was reported stolen from a safe that had been in the office, also unlocked, but Selzer declined to specify how much money was taken.

Surveillance cameras captured the two men, but police have yet to identify or locate them, Selzer said.
