Two suspected bank robbers caught after a brief foot chase Monday gave out-of-state addresses to police, said Cpl. Adam Glueck, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
Officers were called to First State Community Bank, 2527 William St., at 9:48 a.m. in response to a report that a robber had presented a note to a teller and demanded cash. Employees of the bank watched the lone robber get into a green Ford Explorer as he made his getaway, Glueck said. An officer responding to the robbery saw the vehicle on Bloomfield Road and attempted to stop it.
The two men in the vehicle fled on foot after stopping the Explorer just south of Bloomfield Road on Kingshighway. Both were captured after a chase, Glueck said.
The robbery was the second in Cape Girardeau in less than a week. Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, a lone robber wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt presented a note demanding cash at Capaha Bank, 380 N. Kingshighway. The robber fled on foot, but police were not able to determine whether he quickly got into a waiting vehicle or made his escape without a car.
Police were not ready to link the two robberies but officers are investigating whether there is a connection, Glueck said.
Police are withholding the names of the two suspects pending the filing of formal charges, though the two men did say they are from outside of Missouri, Glueck said. Because bank robbery is a federal crime as well as a state crime, federal prosecutors are considering whether to file charges, he said.
No weapon was displayed during the robbery and no one was injured, police said. A bag containing the cash stolen from First State Community Bank was recovered, Glueck said.
The suspects were also being held on suspicion of possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.
