One person has declared he will run for Cape Girardeau County presiding commissioner, while a sitting commissioner and a former candidate have not yet decided whether to run.
Financial adviser Chris Hutson has said he will file for the office.
Despite speculation that he may run, District 2 Commissioner Jay Purcell said Wednesday he has not made a decision.
"It is my hope that the election of a new presiding commissioner will close the door on politics of old and finally allow for three independent county commissioners to promote the needs of our citizens over the needs of government," Purcell said in an e-mailed statement. "Because this election is so pivotal in the direction of our county government, I think it is too early in the process for me to give it serious consideration without first discussing it with my family and also talking to other potential candidates about what direction they believe the county should go in."
Insurance agent Rock Finch, who challenged Purcell in 2008, said he has not ruled out filing for the race for presiding commissioner. He said public reaction will weigh heavily into his decision.
"I have not said no, but I haven't committed to it yet," Finch said. "Like everyone else, I have commitments and responsibilities. I like serving people, but we'll see what happens as we get closer to that magical Feb. 23rd date."
Current Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones said in 2006 that he would not seek re-election this year.
Filing for county offices opens Tuesday and closes March 30. In addition to presiding commissioner, other county offices on the ballot this year are auditor, circuit clerk, both circuit judge posts, collector, county clerk, recorder of deeds and prosecuting attorney.
