A Sikeston, Mo., man and his daughter remained hospitalized Thursday after a car accident Tuesday that killed two other members of their family.

James Gates, 51, and Ashley Gates, 11, were passengers in a vehicle that was struck by a Scott County sheriff's vehicle.

Gates remained in critical condition Thursday night at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau while his daughter's condition was listed as serious.

A joint funeral will be held Saturday for Evelyn Orman, 41, and 12-year-old Brittany Gates, who were killed in the crash. The service will be at 2 p.m. at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, and burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Orman, a self-employed day-care provider, was the girls' maternal aunt.

Brittany Gates was a sixth-grade student at Scott County Central Elementary School and played in the band.

Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Shoemaker was responding to an emergency call on U.S. 61 in Scott County when the crash occurred.

Shoemaker's unmarked patrol car, which was equipped with a siren and dashboard emergency light, struck the compact vehicle driven by Orman, who was attempting to turn left onto County Road 452.

According to police reports, the deputy's car passed two other cars and hit Orman's car in the left rear side. The impact spun her car, leaving it on its side.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's major crash investigation team based in Jackson, Mo., is investigating the crash.
