SILVER LAKE, Mo. -- Two Perryville, Mo., teenagers suffered moderate injuries Saturday morning when they swerved to avoid a deer and struck a tree near Silver Lake, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

Julie A. Moore, 17, was driving southbound at 8:45 a.m. on Route T about a mile south of Silver Lake when she swerved to avoid the animal. The car went off the road and struck a tree.

Moore and her passenger, Brittany R. Brake, 16, were taken by ambulance to Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville for treatment.

The car, a 2006 Dodge Stratus, was reported as a total loss by the patrol.
