Two people were injured Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 55 near Scott City.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-55 near mile marker 84, according to a Scott City Fire Department news release.

One of two people in the vehicle was trapped, and emergency crews extricated the victim from the car, the release stated. He was taken by helicopter to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Scott City fire Deputy Chief Billy Crump said.

Crump did not know the man's condition, but said he had "pretty serious injuries."

The second passenger in the vehicle was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis. The victim's condition was not immediately available.

Southbound lanes were closed for about an hour, backing traffic past the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, Crump said.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol dispatcher could not provide additional information on the accident.
