Two people arrested in stolen-vehicle case

Two suspects are in custody in Scott County in connection with a stolen-vehicle case, Sheriff Rick Walter said in a news release Sunday.

Jennifer Niswonger, 31, of 1300 W. Mar Elm St. in Scott City, has been charged with tampering with a motor vehicle, a felony, and stealing, a misdemeanor.

Trevor Niswonger, 32, of 700 E. Pine St. in Scott City, has been charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

Chief deputy Kenneth Kinder said the two are ex-spouses.

In the release, Walter said that at about 1 p.m. Friday, senior deputy Matt Scroggins was contacted by the victim regarding a stolen motor vehicle case he had been working. The victim was able to provide information that Scroggins used to further his investigation.

Scroggins got information that Trevor Niswonger had possession of stolen property, which had allegedly been taken from the same residence as two vehicles. Scroggins made contact with Trevor Niswonger, recovered the stolen items, and received a statement that Jennifer Niswonger had given him the stolen items and admitted to stealing the vehicle, the release said.

Scroggins arrested both suspects and they were taken to the Scott County Jail. Deputies are searching for a third person believed to be involved in the theft of the vehicle and other items.

Jennifer Niswonger remains in custody in the Scott County Jail. Bond has been set by the court at $500 cash-only. Trevor Niswonger remains in custody at the Scott County Jail. Bond has been set by the court at $350 cash-only.
