A car crashed through the wall Sunday night of a city-owned shed at the Shawnee Park Center in Cape Girardeau, ripping open a 10-foot hole and injuring two men in the vehicle.
The car eventually landed on its windshield, pinned against a tractor. It appears the car used a nearby ditch almost like a ramp.
The driver, Manuel Carpio Chanocua, 26, of Marble Hill, Missouri, and another man were found in another vehicle within minutes of the accident by Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety officers at Broadway and Caruthers Avenue. Both were taken to a hospital.
The passenger had a large laceration on his forehead and other scratches to his face and arms, according to Cape Girardeau public-information officer Adam Glueck. He said the head wound explains the large amount of blood found at the scene.
Chanocua said he was experiencing pain in his right shoulder and left hand, Glueck said. He said the men’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
Chanocua was issued citations for exhibition driving, leaving the scene of the accident, failure to wear a seat belt and failure to drive on a roadway inside a city park, Glueck said.
Glueck said police still are investigating whether Chanocua was intoxicated.
Damage was reported to the shed’s wall, a beam of the structure and for a John Deere tractor, Glueck said.
