Killed in Monday's crash were Richard Mell, 41, of Patterson and his 14-year-old daughter, Ariel. Gary Volz, 42, of St. Louis had been taken to a hospital in Poplar Bluff in serious condition, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. He has since been released, hospital employees said.

The Highway Patrol said Mell was headed west on Highway 34 outside of Piedmont, when he ran off the left side of the road. The patrol report said he then overcorrected into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Volz.
