KENNETT, Mo. (AP) -- A Southeast Missouri man has been charged in the weekend stabbing death of a Sullivan man.

Max Arnold, 26, of Caruthersville, was being held without bond Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder and armed-criminal action in the death of Phillip Jarvas, 32.

Arnold's girlfriend, Shelon Skelton, 30, of Gobler, was charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Police said Jarvas was found dead under a carport in Kennett on Sunday. Police said a witness told officers he saw Jarvas arguing with another man, later identified as Max Arnold, at a Kennett home the night before.

Police said the witness told them the altercation started because Jarvas was harassing people at the home and picking fights.

Police said the witness told them Arnold hit Jarvas with a beer bottle. Ten minutes later, according to the witness, Jarvas returned with a lug wrench and struck Arnold. Police said the witness reported that Arnold then stabbed Jarvas with a pocket knife.

The Duklin County prosecutor's office did not immediately return a call Wednesday.
