Two teens are in custody in connection with a string of Cape Girardeau car break-ins.

Zachary Carpenter, 19, and Preston Hattenhauer, 18, both of Cape Girardeau were arrested Friday night at North Park Avenue and Broadway after Cape Girardeau police found one of them entering a car and the other walking away from the car, said police spokesman Darin Hickey. When officers approached Hattenhauer and Carpenter, they noticed the two men were intoxicated and found "suspicious" tools, Hickey said.

Police believe Carpenter and Hattenhauer broke into about 10 cars, Hickey said.

Carpenter and Hattenhauer are charged with being visibly intoxicated minors and misdemeanor theft. At his arraignment Monday, Carpenter was found to be indigent and in need of a public defender, according to online court documents. He did not enter a plea and remains in Cape Girardeau County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond.
