Jane Thorpe, local FBLA president, and Barbara Lohr, Cape FBLA adviser, recently returned from the national leadership conference of Future Business Leaders of America held in Anaheim, Calif. June 30-July 5.
Thorpe was selected as a national finalist in the Ms. Future Business Leader contest. She was representing the state of Missouri in the competition.
Before the contest, the recent Cape Central graduate submitted a letter of application and a resume to the national office. These were evaluated as part of the contest. Thorpe also took a test covering all aspects of business, parliamentary procedure, and knowledge of FBLA. All contestants had a preliminary interview with three judges.
Thorpe was selected one of 15 finalists and had the opportunity for a longer, more in-depth interview with three different judges.
She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Thorpe.
Thorpe said that her FBLA experience has helped her learn and use her leadership skills in conducting meetings, dealing effectively with all kinds of people, and relating information about herself, her future plans and FBLA to others in an organized manner. She feels these skills will help her this fall when she will attend Princeton to pursue a law degree.
More than 4,000 high school students from across the nation, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Europe competed in over 30 business contests. Participants also attended leadership workshops and elected new officers.
