BENTON, Mo. -- A man and a woman were arrested after an incident at the Scott County Courthouse late last week.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said Matthew Carmack, 23, of Sikeston, Missouri, and Nicole Layton, 30, of Perryville, Missouri, were arrested by Scott County deputies outside the Scott County Courthouse in Benton.

The arrests stem from a report received about 3:50 p.m. Thursday of an intoxicated woman inside the courthouse. Walter, Sgt. Barry Morgan and deputy Carl Rose found Layton outside the courthouse as she was getting into a vehicle.

The motor was running as the officers approached and the driver was recognized as Carmack, whose license is revoked. Carmack was arrested.

After further investigation, officers determined that Layton was in possession of a controlled substance and had supplied it to a second man, also at the scene. Layton was also taken into custody.

Carmack was charged with driving while revoked/suspended, while Layton was charged with possession and distribution of a controlled substance.
