SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois hunters bagged a total of 3,475 turkeys during the recent spring turkey season, exceeding the 1990 harvest by 595 birds.
"The turkey harvest has exceed the previous season every year since the modern season started in 1970," said Illinois Department of Conservation director Brent Manning.
Turkey hunting in Illinois ceased in 1903 when the birds disappeared in the state.
The season was reopened in 1970.
Hunters bagged 82 turkeys in Alexander County and 130 birds in Union County.
