Foreign language majors at Southeast Missouri State University now have $13,000 more to draw on for scholarships to study abroad.

Participants in an 11-day German tour donated some of the money and the Southeast Missouri University Foundation contributed matching funds.

Part of the money paid by the 15 participants in the German trip went toward scholarships for the university's foreign languages department.

Participants stayed in 11th to 14th century German castles during the May 11-22 trip.

At Schloss Sommersdorf near Burgoberbach, they donned medieval costumes for a ceremony in which each was knighted by Baron von Crailsheim whose family has owned the castle since 1200.

The group also toured the Stihl chain saw factory near Stuttgart.

Dr. Dieter Jedan, foreign languages department chairman, said he hopes to organize another tour in 1998 to benefit the scholarship fund.
