Marvin and LaFern Schoen set a good 4-H example for their children and grandchildren.

The Schoens have logged 73 years of 4-H volunteer service.

"We've been involved in 4-H since our children were born," said LaFern Schoen. "My husband has been involved 39 years."

Mrs. Schoen has worked with 4-H 34 years.

The Schoen family -- Marvin and LaFern Schoen, their four children and 11 grandchildren -- have logged a total of 251 years in 4-H involvement and qualify as a 4-H Century Family.

"4-H provides great activities," said LaFern Schoen. "We highly recommend it."

The 4-H program is observing its 100th anniversary this year. The Cape Girardeau County 4-H Council will hold a special celebration March 16 to honor Missouri 4-H families who have a combined 100 years or more membership and/or volunteer service in 4-H.

"We have a number of families in our area who will easily qualify as 4-H Century Families," said Donna Taake, Southeast Region 4-H youth specialist at the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension office at Jackson, Mo.

Already qualifying are the Schoens; Stephen and Teresa Meier, Jackson, 167 years; Joe C. and Mildred Kirchdoerfer, Cape Girardeau, 103 years; Lesa Holland Weiss and Chris N. Weiss, Jackson, 145 years; Stephen and Catherine Golden, Burfordville, 137 years; Paul Koerber and Bernice Koerber, 120 years; Mrs. Marjorie (Norman) Swan, Pocahontas, 152 years.

"We expect to see more century families," said Taake.

Only direct-line family members can be counted as century families. Aunts, uncles and cousins may not be considered. Step-parents, stepchildren or adopted parents may be included.

The March 16 celebration, to be held at the University Outreach and Extension Center, lower level, from 7 to 9 p.m., will feature a number of activities.

"It all started out as just a square dance," said Taake. "Square dancing is a big event in any 4-H meeting. But the evening has evolved into a big night."

A number of 4-H projects will be on display, and presentations will be made to each 4-H Century Family. 4-H alumni and volunteers are welcome to attend.

Applications for 4-H Century Family status are available at the extension office, 648 W. Jackson Trail.
