Dr. Timothy W. Jones, Ph.D. along with Principal Chief Lola Scholl and Deputy Chief Larry Turman of the Western Cherokee Nation of Arkansas and Missouri will be presenting two lectures on Jan. 22, in Cape Girardeau.
The first lecture will be in the University Center located on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The lecture there will begin at 11 a.m. in the University Ballroom. The second lecture will be at 3 p.m. at the visitor's center of the Trail Of Tears State Park.
Dr. Jones, Research Anthropologist, has been working with the tribe gathering and recording the history of the Cherokee associated with the tribe. Very little has been written on the tribe and what happened to those Cherokee that did not go on to the reservations. Dr. Jones has over 25 years of field research and reporting on archaeology and anthropology. He currently serves as the Historian for the tribe and is directing the Federal Acknowledgment Program and Government Building Program. Currently working in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology at The University of Arizona, Dr. Jones will be taking time off to come to the area to do more research and share his findings.
The tribe does not currently have State or Federal recognition but has notified the Bureau of Indian Affairs of their intent to petition. The tribe is currently taking enrollment applications. They can be obtained by sending a self addressed stamped envelope to the Tribal office at 776 Highway 3 5 1, Paragould, AR 72450. For questions concerning the lectures you can contact Tribal Delegate April Rhodes at april-rhodes@yahoo.com or (573) 243-4638.
