Trial date set for suspect in Cape Mart robbery

A trial date has been set for a homeless 18-year-old man that Cape Girardeau police have connected to three June robberies, two of which took place at Cape Mart on North Fountain Street.

Courtrel Walker was in court in front of Judge Benjamin Lewis on Monday, when a jury trial was set for Jan. 11 and 12, said Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle. Walker faces two counts of first-degree robbery for the two Cape Mart incidents. In each of those incidents, Walker allegedly displayed to a store clerk what appeared to be a handgun and took off with an undetermined amount of cash.

A warrant was issued for Walker's arrest later in June after police was suspected he was involved in a robbery at Town House Inn. In that case, he was charged with felony robbery. Walker is a prior offender in Mississippi County, where he was charged in May 2010 with misdemeanor property damage. He received one year of probation for that crime.
