The Salvation Army has raised $30,000 of its $115,000 goal, announced Carol Keeler, Salvation Army Tree of Lights chairman.
Keeler said they have noticed somewhat of a decline in giving, but still expressed optimism that it can be reached by Dec. 24.
She asks those considering a donation to remember that their contributions will not only help during the Christmas season, but through the year. Salvation Army programs, including its food bank, aid people in need during all seasons.
Capt. Elmer Trapp said about 1,000 individuals have already signed up for Christmas assistance this year. He anticipates that number will reach 3,000.
Those persons needing to sign up for assistance can do so until Dec. 15. Persons need their Social Security card for every member of the family, proof of income, and current address.
Application hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m. every Monday through Friday.
Persons wishing to make a donation can do so by mail to Box 802. Monetary gifts can also be dropped off at the Salvation Army office at 701 Good Hope or at the red kettles set up at various businesses in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
The Salvation Army is also seeking donations of canned and non-perishable food items and new toys for needy children. For more information, persons can call 335-7000.
