The Salvation Army is running ahead of last year on its Tree of Lights fund-raising campaign, with $15,500 of its $125,000 goal already collected.
Money raised through the program will be used for Christmas baskets and other programs throughout the year. Almost 1,000 people already have signed up for Christmas assistance, and Capt. Elmer Trapp of the local Salvation Army congregation said he expects 3,500 to sign up before the Dec. 9 deadline.
Those who need assistance this Christmas may sign up at the Salvation Army office, 701 Good Hope, from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. They should bring a Social Security card for everyone in the family and proof of income and their current address.
Donations may be made at the Salvation Army office, the red kettles throughout Cape Girardeau and Jackson, or by mail to: Salvation Army, P.O. Box 802, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0802.
