The trash and recycling schedules in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be altered the next two weeks as the cities observe the holidays.
Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on Fridays this year.
In Cape Girardeau, when the holiday falls on a Friday, Thursday's trash and recycling routes will be run Wednesday -- in this case Dec. 23 and 30, respectively.
Routes regularly scheduled for Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 will be run Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
All other routes will remain the same.
In Jackson, those with a regular trash-pickup day of Friday will have their garbage collected the following Mondays, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4, according to a news release from Jackson Public Works director Rodney Bollinger. The recycling center will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Households needing to dispose of live Christmas trees will have the opportunity to do so.
Jackson will be accepting and recycling trees at a designated area at the recycling center. The Public Works Department asks all lights, ornaments, tinsel and other decorations be removed before dropping off the tree. Jackson uses the recycled trees for bank fortification along Hubble Creek in City Park.
For Christmas-tree disposal in Cape Girardeau, solid-waste superintendent Mike Tripp said residents have a few options.
Curbside pickup can be scheduled for Jan. 6, 13 or 27, the city's regular special-pickup days, for a $5 fee.
Residents who prefer to haul away their own trees may take them to the southeast corner of Arena Park for free disposal or to the transfer station for a disposal fee. Trees collected by the city occasionally are used in ponds but often are used to make mulch, Tripp said.
Tripp added the city allows for a "reasonable amount of extra trash" the week after Christmas and New Year's Day. He said additional bags may be set out on the curb along with the regular city trash can.
