Transit authority stops buses; cabs roll on

The Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority has stopped running its buses.

Cabs continue to traverse the ice-slicked streets.

"I'm going to do what I have to do get people back and forth," said Tom Mogelnicki, the transit authority's executive director. "We'll probably be limiting our rides to hospital, grocery, pharmacy and doctors' offices. Necessary trips."

Mogelnicki said he was not aware of the decision to close city and county offices, nor the city of Cape Girardeau's request that all businesses close early.

"I left (my office) to take a customer out to his house because our cab couldn't go where he lived," said Mogelnicki, who drives an SUV. That drive, which normally takes 15 minutes, took 40 minutes, he said.

Buses were stopped at 2 p.m.

"We still really need to stay open as much as we can. There's people at work that have to get home. We're going to do the best we can do," Mogelnicki said.
