BERNIE -- A Southern Pacific train struck and killed a 24-year-old Bernie man early Sunday morning at the town's northern city limits.

James Barron Carter was lying across the railroad tracks when hit by the train headed from St. Louis to Pine Bluff, Ark., authorities said.

The incident occurred south of the Hunt's Road Crossing. A Stoddard County Sheriff's Department said foul play is not suspected.

Coroner Ray Rainey said Carter was killed on impact. His investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
