Tractor-trailer, train collide near Nash Road

A Burlington-Northern Santa Fe train dragged a semi's trailer for at least a quarter of a mile before it managed to stop Monday morning, after the train and truck collided in south Cape Girardeau County.

The unidentified driver sustained only minor injuries, said Cape Girardeau assistant fire chief Mark Hasheider. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported after emergency crews responded to a 9:53 a.m. call to the crash site along Route AB, less than a mile west of the BioKyowa plant on Nash Road, Hasheider said. The semitrailer was carrying corn in the westbound lane of Route AB, he said, when it was hit by the train.

Law enforcement was still investigating Monday, but the train apparently struck the semitrailer's hindquarters. The cab appeared to have been knocked loose in the collision, which jostled it out of the roadway. A section of Route AB was closed Monday morning as officials with the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. inspected the train.
