A toddler involved in an apparent swimming pool accident over the weekend at a Jackson residence remained in a St. Louis hospital late Monday, according to Cape Girardeau County Detective Jamie Malugen.

The 20-month-old boy was discovered around 9:20 a.m. Sunday by his father, who immediately called for help, Malugen said.

The child's mother had awakened with him and fixed him breakfast earlier that morning, put in a video for him to watch, and fallen back to sleep, Malugen said.

When the toddler's father awoke a short while later, he noticed the sliding glass door to the backyard was open and saw his son in the pool unconscious, Malugen said.

There was a gate around the swimming pool, but the door had been accidentally left open because of some work that was being done to the pool, Malugen said.

The child was transported to a St. Louis hospital where, as of 3 p.m. Monday, he remained in critical condition, though some of his vital signs had improved Sunday night, Malugen said.

The parents will not face criminal charges or summonses, Malugen said.
