The Scott City School Board on Wednesday recognized three students for being state grade-level winners in the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest.
The students, first-grader Houston Griffaw, second-grader Lilyan Landis and third-grader Logan Schiwitz, received medals and framed pictures of their entries.
Now in its 24th year, the contest encourages legible handwriting by evaluating the abilities of students in kindergarten through eighth grade who use the Zaner-Bloser handwriting curricula.
After each participating school held its own handwriting contest, one winning student from each grade was entered in the national competition. The Scott City students were among nearly 300,000 entrants nationwide.
Also at the board meeting, elementary principal Courtney Kern said 231 students are enrolled in summer school.
Middle-school principal Mike Umfleet said the school will offer three sessions that include hunter safety, Spanish and exploratory science. So far, 89 students are enrolled.
High-school principal Mike Johnson said about 100 students are enrolled to take courses such as dual-credit psychology, physical education and remedial courses.
Forms are available at all building offices, and summer school dates are May 28 through June 19. The morning session is from 7:40 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., and the afternoon is 11:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
