Three Rivers College has announced a new program called Evening Advantage, designed to make it easier for nontraditional students to obtain an associate degree.

The program, set to start in August, will allow participants to complete an associate degree in general education with two nights of classes per week for two years. Director of communications Teresa Johnson said the application is at trcc.edu/home.php.

Mary Lou Brown, Three Rivers dean of academic instruction, said in a news release that the program accomplishes its accelerated schedule by offering dedicated Evening Advantage-only classes taken in eight-week blocks. The classes are set up so students are considered full time and can qualify for full federal financial aid, the release said.

Associate degrees earned through Evening Advantage will transfer into a bachelor's degree completion program, including those offered at the Three Rivers campus, the release said. Three Rivers also has articulation agreements with Missouri State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Mizzou and Arkansas State University that allow transfer to those institutions.

To qualify, new students must have applied to Three Rivers and test into ENG 111, College Writing, and Math 163, College Algebra, through the ACT or COMPASS placement exam. Current students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a recommendation from a faculty or community member. Those interested in Evening Advantage who don't initially qualify may talk to an adviser about classes that prepare students for college-level work.
