Four Southeast Missouri State University students were charged Tuesday in connection to the Dec. 13 assault of another college student at an off-campus house.

Antonio Garritano, 19, of Jackson was charged with first-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, according to Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle. Derek Gohn, 19, of Bridgeton, Mo.; Jared Goodson, 22, and Pili Showers, 21, both of Cape Girardeau, were also charged with first-degree burglary.

Garritano, Gohn and Goodson are listed on the university's football roster.

"These individuals will immediately be withheld from all athletically related activities until we have had a chance to review all available facts in this case," said Jeff Honza, director of Southeast sports information.

Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Cpl. Adam Glueck said detectives are still following up on leads in the case. The investigation was initially slowed because many of the people involved were out of town for Christmas vacation.

"It's not over for right now," Glueck said of the investigation. "They do a thorough job, and sometimes it takes time."

Blake Carlton, 21, a junior international business major from St. Louis, said he was sleeping on the couch of the house at 1325 Dunklin St. when he was assaulted. He was thrown on a coffee table and later blacked out. His injuries included a black eye and a blow to the head.

According to a probable-cause affidavit by Cape Girardeau police Detective Keith Green, Brett Jones, another football player who has been charged in the case, said he saw Garritano hit Carlton as many as 16 times and that Garritano insisted via text message during Christmas break that Jones take the blame.

When he was arrested Jan. 25, Jones admitted he had entered the house and punched Carlton one time with his fist, according to the affidavit. While being interviewed by Green again Feb. 5, Jones said he, Gohn, Goodson, Garritano, and Showers all went to and entered the Dunklin Street residence together.

According to the affidavit, Jones said he didn't see anyone but Garritano strike Carlton and that he saw Goodson throw a bottle and make a mess in the house. Gohn, he told Green, flipped over a table.

Bond for Gohn, Goodson and Showers is set at $10,000 cash only. Bond for Garritano is set at $35,000 cash only.
