Three members of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People attended the organization's 84th annual convention in July.
Attending from Cape Girardeau were Michael Sterling, local chapter president; Debra Willis, community action chairman; and Dawn Evans, secretary.
The meeting was held in Indianopolis, where new executive director Dr. Benjamin Chavis talked about putting new hope and change in progress.
Also addressing the convention was Nelson Mandela, president of the African National Congress, who gave the opening day address.
President Bill Clinton spoke to delegates through a teleaddress. Vice President Al Gore addressed the convention also, stating that the administration will not tolerate racism or ethnic injustice.
