CAIRO, Ill. -- Five mayors and a village president will be elected in three Southern Illinois counties when voters go to the polls Tuesday.

Only three of the six races are contested, including the one in Alexander County at Cairo, where first-term mayor James Wilson faces challenger Cordell McGoy. Wilson had 831 votes during the recent four-candidate primary, and McGoy finished the primary with 476 votes.

Wilson, who was elected four years ago, said he ran this time primarily on his past record. He said he has worked hard to make city government a partner with the community.

Wilson said that he and the council have accomplished several things during his administration, including a reduction in the crime rate, a new boat ramp on the Ohio River, more lighting in Cairo and grants for various improvements.

McGoy, a Cairo native and longtime member of the Cairo City Council, is running on a "more jobs" platform and is working with the Southernmost Development Committee to help attract a Tyson Chicken processing plant to the Cairo area.

McGoy, who works at the Vienna Correctional Center, was first elected to the council in 1987.

He said he has some "areas of priority" for the community, his first concern being the development of employment opportunities, public safety and the city's budget deficit.

Another race in Cairo will be between Steve Wiesenmayer and Thomas Burris Jr. for at-large councilman.

Other races in Cairo are in the third ward, where Earl Wade and Barbara Hollis are squaring off, and in the fifth ward, with Carolyn Ponting against William Miller.

In Union County, incumbent Mayor Ken Kohler will face Steve Hartline for Anna mayor, and the race for Anna city commissioners has eight candidates seeking four positions.
