Three people were sent to a Cape Girardeau hospital Monday after the white Chevrolet Cobalt they were in drove off the southbound lane of Interstate 55 and came to rest on its roof.

The accident happened about 11:30 a.m. near mile marker 92, according to Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department. The vehicle was following a tractor-trailer in the left southbound lane of Interstate 55 when the 18-wheeler ran over a bag of dry concrete mix, sending a cloud of dust into the air, Hickey said. The Cobalt changed lanes to miss the bag of concrete mix and drove off the right side of the road, rolling on to its top, he said.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle, both women from Sikeston, Mo., and a 9 year old also in the vehicle suffered minor injuries, Hickey said.
