50 animals rescued from terrible conditions

The Daily Dunklin Democrat newspaper in Kennett, Mo., had some interesting news to report today: authorities in Kennett seized a combined 50 dogs and birds from a house there, where the animals and an elderly man were living in filth.

The case is somewhat similar to one here in Cape Girardeau in November, when 20 cats were rescued from filth in a mobile home.

But in the Kennett case, it was dogs and birds, and an old man who apparently couldn't care for them. Click here for more on this story.

Get ready for the cold

Extremely cold weather is on its way to Southeast Missouri today, according to the National Weather Service. The advance of a cold front coming down from the north has prompted a wind chill advisory, as wind chill values should fall below zero after midnight.

Men accused of mortgage fraud to stand trial

The two men arrested in November in what federal authorities say is a mortgage fraud scheme designed to enrich themselves will face trial in February, a federal judge in Cape Girardeau determined this morning.

Russell T. McBride, 46, and Robert Wrolstadt, 59, appeared before a judge today.

Office computer hijinks

In weird news, a former USDA worker in Kansas City, Mo., is being accused of running a prostitution ring from her office computer. The former USDA worker, Laurie Lynn McConnell, 26, was arrested Wednesday along with a second suspect in the case, John O. Miller, 36. Both are from Kansas City.
