When Cecilia Rose Hendrix was born, her eyes were fused shut, her lungs had barely developed and an infection wracked her delicate body.

Weighing only 1 pound, 2 ounces, Cecilia Rose was born after 23 weeks, nearly four months early. A baby born then has about a 15 percent chance of survival.

"She has not only made it, she has really thrived," said her father, Rob Hendrix.

He thinks the days plagued with worry are nearly over, although he knows potential problems could lie ahead.

Just tipping the scales at four pounds now, her parents hope they can take Cecilia Rose home around Christmas. Her expected due date was Dec. 23; she was born Aug. 29.

"It's hard to think about and look at pictures. I know she's a miracle," said her mother, Leann Hendrix.

Still requiring supplemental oxygen and feeding through a tube, Cecilia Rose has been removed from a ventilator and the IVs pumping antibiotics through her body. Her heart valve has closed and worries about her ability to see and hear have been laid to rest.

"She's been having a whole lot of good days. It looks like she's going to be just fine," Rob Hendrix said.

Every day, both parents go to Saint Francis Medical Center to pray over Cecilia Rose. With six other children, a balance had to be struck between hospital time and home life.

Referring to her other children, Leann Hendrix said, "They've given up a lot, but they can't wait until she can come home."

This experience has made Rob Hendrix realize the fragility of life and has made him eternally thankful. "She smiles really big and that's just like opening up heaven to me. She's really endeared herself to us."
