Several Cape Girardeau churches will present living nativity scenes this weekend.
One at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church will include sheep, donkeys and camels, in addition to Mary, Joseph and the wise men.
"We've never done anything like this before," said Doris Dace, the wife of the Rev. Jimmie Dace of the church.
"It's a good family activity. We've hoping a lot of people drive past," Dace said.
The living nativity scene will be presented Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the church lawn at 624 South Ellis.
Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road, will also present a living nativity Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Jeffrey Sippy said about 12 members of the church's youth group will participate in the 20-minute presentations.
"I think what's unique about this nativity is the narration and the kids actually walking through the Christmas story," Sippy said. "It's pretty dramatic to hear the story and see the presentation."
Hanover Lutheran also attempted to present a living nativity last year, but cold weather and snow canceled the event.
"We ended up doing a private showing for about 50 people, but the youth group and members of the congregation were very disappointed," Sippy said. "There was a strong feeling that we should do it again this year. The youth are very excited."
Animals in Hanover's production include a pony, sheep and goats. Spectators are invited in the church parish hall after the presentations for refreshments, Sippy said.
Sippy will narrate the Christmas story, and spectators will be able to remain in their cars if they wish and still hear the story and songs.
About 30 people of all ages will participate in Maple Avenue's nativity scene. Dace said three groups of 10 church members will take turns being part of the scene.
"We'll have little angels and big angels," she said. "Some people will do solos, and we'll have recorded music in between."
