Tenn. man caught in Cape found guilty in carjacking

A man arrested in Cape Girardeau for a Tennessee carjacking and beating was found guilty in the case this week.

A jury took two hours to convict Raymond D. Ross, of Humboldt, Tenn., Wednesday of aggravated assault, carjacking, reckless endangerment and theft of property in the 2005 beating of Troy Bowman III. He was acquitted of attempted second-degree murder.

Bowman was beaten and robbed Feb. 15, 2005, in Lexington, Tenn. The victim, who was 17 years old at the time, was in a coma for 18 days and suffered 10 hemorrhages and two contusions from the attack.

Police suspected Ross early in the investigation, but were unable to locate him. Bowman's car, a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, was found partially burned a day after the attack in Gibson County.

Following a segment about the beating on the nationally syndicated "America's Most Wanted," a tipster reported Ross was seen in Cape Girardeau, 200 miles from the attack.

Ross, who was 21 at the time, had been staying with his girlfriend at her mother's home and was getting ready to leave town when he was arrested.
