Weather permitting, the road should be closed for approximately three weeks.

Motorists traveling through the city of Jackson will need to plan on taking an alternate street when trying to reach Route 34 by way of Daisy Avenue beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Daisy Avenue will be closed so Penzel Construction can remove the temporary bypass put in place for the Hubble Creek Bridge replacement, said Darius Dowdy, Missouri Department of Transportation's resident engineer.

Weather permitting, the road should be closed for approximately three weeks while the contractor works on grading and placing the permanent asphalt at the Daisy/Route 34 intersection.

"Right now with the hurricane coming, we're not sure if we'll be able to get started on time," said Kevin Plott, MoDOT senior construction inspector.

The work is part of Route 34 improvements, which includes widening the existing route to four lanes, resurfacing the road, replacing a bridge and adding signals.

"It [Daisy Avenue] has been closed before," Dowdy said. "It was closed for a couple of days in December."

Dowdy said there had been no problems for motorists in the past when Daisy was closed.

"Traffic will only need to go up two blocks," Plott said of the Daisy Avenue detour. "The street will be opened to residents who live on Daisy."

Motorists are asked to use caution in the work zone and plan alternate routes. Dowdy suggests that drivers, who regularly travel down Daisy use either Farmington, Adams or West Main streets.

The Route 34 improvements began in July 2004 and should be complete this winter.
