Teens held in BB gun shooting near French school

LYON, France -- Several teenagers were taken into custody Friday night after 11 adults were injured in a pellet gun shooting near a nursery school in the French city of Lyon, the city's prosecutor said.

Prosecutor Xavier Rich­aud told reporters it appeared that a 17-year-old had been trying out a new BB gun from his parents' apartment earlier Friday, injuring adults near the Harmony nursery school as they collected children before the lunch break.

Two or three teens were detained after a police investigation of the trajectory of the 4.5 mm shots led them to the apartment, Richaud said.

The teens didn't "realize the seriousness of the events," he told reporters.

Of the 11 people hit, three were taken to a hospital and immediately released, Richaud said.

He said some mothers were lightly injured on their arms and legs and a police officer who was one of the first on the scene was also hit in the leg. Richaud said the firing ceased after the officer was hit.

It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired, he said.

Anne Le Scanff, spokeswoman for the Lyon school district, said the shooter was not aiming at the school.

The school's afternoon session was canceled.
