PISOS POINT, Mo. -- A Wappapello, Mo., man is recovering from surgery at a Cape Girardeau hospital after he was allegedly shot by his teenage daughter Wednesday night during a domestic dispute.
According to Wayne County Sgt. Ray Koch, the sheriff's department learned of the shooting at about 8:55 p.m. from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Deputies, along with members of the Missouri Department of Conservation and first responders with the Wappapello Fire Department, responded to the residence on Veterans Ridge Road, which is off Pisos Point Road and Route D.
The shooting, according to Koch, was the result of a domestic disturbance between the man, who was believed to be intoxicated, and his estranged wife and two teenage daughters.
The man, whose name is being withheld at this time, did not make entry into the residence.
"He got the gun barrel in, but he didn't enter the trailer," Koch explained. "Apparently, they were fighting to keep him out of the residence."
The man was shot in the "mid-back" area with a .25-caliber pistol by his 15-year-old daughter as he attempted to force entry into the residence at gunpoint, Koch said.
According to Koch, the man was armed with a loaded .22-caliber rifle; a loaded double-barrel, 12-gauge shotgun and a Marlin .444-caliber, lever-action deer rifle.
After the shooting occurred, a boyfriend of one of the teens called authorities.
Koch said a Stoddard County ambulance responded to the scene and emergency medical services personnel took the man to a helicopter pad on Youth Camp Road at Wappapello.
From there, the man was flown to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girar-deau where he underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments, Koch explained.
The bullet reportedly did not exit and could be seen near the surface of the man's abdomen, Koch said. His condition is not known at this time.
"We're at the top of the iceberg at the moment," Koch said. "We're gathering evidence and will be doing interviews this afternoon with the family."
Koch said they have asked the Cape Girardeau Police Department to send an officer to the hospital in an attempt to get a statement from the man.
