Teen in custody after allegedly shooting mom

NEELYVILLE, Mo. -- A Neelyville teenager is in juvenile custody after he allegedly told officers he shot his mother when she threatened to take his guns away, said Butler County Sheriff Bill Heaton.

Ginny Harris Grandberry, 37, was allegedly killed by her 16-year-old son. An autopsy is to be performed on Grandberry, who lived at 428 Main St. in Neelyville, according to Butler County Deputy Coroner Bruce Goin.

Authorities were first notified of the incident at 7:03 a.m. through a 911 hang-up call followed by a call reporting a shooting at the Grandberry residence. When the first deputy arrived at the scene minutes later, police say the juvenile walked out of the house holding a gun.

Reserve deputy Gary Davidson pulled out his weapon and told the juvenile to put down the gun. The juvenile complied and Heaton said it was then that the boy said "he had shot her."

According to officers, the juvenile later said he had four beers and when he woke up earlier in the morning his mother had threatened to take his guns away. He offered no further information and the coroner was not immediately able to determine how many shots were fired. The victim was found lying face up on the bedroom floor with injuries to the head, the coroner said. Several long-barrel shotguns were removed from the house as officers processed the scene.
