Teen charged with assault on officer and resisting arrest

A Wappapello teen is out on bond after he was arrested for attempting to strike a Stoddard County Sheriff's Deputy on Saturday, the final night of the Stoddard County Fair.

Zachary Hunter Vonruden, 17, of Wappapello, Mo., was jailed and charged with third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Deputy Andrew Johnson, about 9:30 p.m. Johnson observed Vonruden at the demolition derby causing a disturbance near the fence by yelling and cursing at a derby official.

Johnson said he approached Vonruden and told him he needed to leave, but Vonruden refused.

Johnson then grabbed Vonruden by the right arm to escort him off the premises. At that point, Johnson said, Vonruden pulled away and swung his right arm at the deputy.

Johnson ordered him to place his hands behind his back -- he continued to refuse.

Cpl. Travis Stafford, also of the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department, then helped Johnson place Vonruden against a fence in an attempt to handcuff him.

Vonruden continued pulling away, so Johnson and Stafford took him to the ground in another attempt to cuff him. Vonruden continued to resist.

Eventually Johnson managed to get him handcuffed.

He was transported to the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department where he posted a $5,000 bond. He will be arraigned today before Judge Joe Z. Satterfield.
