Teen charged in shooting, robbery scheduled for hearing this week

A teen accused of shooting and robbing a man at a Cape Girardeau intersection was scheduled for a preliminary hearing this week.

George A. Henry, 18, of 805 Ranney Ave., was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. He is accused of shooting a 23-year-old man during a drug deal near Benton Street and Jefferson Avenue on Feb. 14.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Henry will appear in court before Associate Circuit Judge Michael J. Bullerdieck for a preliminary hearing.

Around 7:20 p.m. Feb. 14, the victim had met another man to buy marijuana in the 500 block of Benton Street, according to a probable-cause statement in the case.

The dealer told the victim he would instead have to "deal with his 'guy,'" according to the statement.

The victim followed the other individual, who was later identified by the dealer as Henry. Henry pulled out a gun and demanded money from the victim, who ran away.

As he was running, the victim was shot in the back and fell to the ground, according to the probable-cause statement.

The victim told police the gunman rifled through his pocket and stole at least $500 in cash.

The dealer witnessing the shooting told police he saw Henry searching the victim's pockets after shooting him, the statement read.

Following the attack and robbery, the victim was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Three days after the shooting, a warrant was issued for Henry, who turned himself over to authorities Feb. 27.

The defendant was being held in lieu a $500,000 cash or surety bond.
